The growing number of contributors (600+) and almost 6000 stars on GitHub makes Sylius a more recognizable figure on the eCommerce market with each passing day. The progressing popularity of the eCommerce Sylius platform acquires more and more companies to decide to trust this technology. By choosing Sylius, those companies can work on a blank sheet to include only those modules that are relevant to their business and integrate them according to their flow. As a result, they will get a scalable solution that fits their needs, works fast, looks appealing and drives the maximum conversions.

In this article, we will take a look at the most significant projects that are running on top of Sylius, but first, start with a few words about the solution.

Sylius is an eCommerce platform, so it is an engine that allows building an online store.

It is often referred to as a framework as it provides a technological base and a set of methodologies to help companies and IT teams build medium and large eCommerce systems. It is made with many integrations in mind, such as CRM, PIM, ERP, in which Sylius is the crucial point. First official (1.0.0) version was released in 2017 and from this time, their community grew to 3300+ Slack users. Sylius is released under the MIT license (commercial in Sylius Plus) and fully open-source.

Although it is not a solution, where every functionality comes just out-of-the-box, its huge advantage is that it is highly customizable. Developer – friendly environment (based on the PHP framework – Symfony) makes setting up the projects a few times faster than it is in the other platforms. To ensure the best quality, Sylius promises stability, easy upgrades and robust testing framework. Sylius is powered by Behaviour-Driven-Development. Tests are part of the development process, which guarantees the highest quality and performance. BDD is an evolution of TDD, where instead of writing the code first, and then checking the operation, the specification is first written (at the unit level or the entire application) – what behaviour is expected. Then the code is written for it.

BestValue

Category:
Fashion
Type:
eCommerce solution

About the company

BestValue is a Romanian brand that is running duty-free shops in all major airports. As the model they provide proved to be attractive, the company decided to set up an online store too.

About the problem

Firstly, BestValue required a few key points that some eCommerce platforms were lack of. They were: scalability, development ease, usage of modern frameworks and PHP functionalities, cloud compatibility. The second challenge was providing the same experience online as in the shop. It meant allowing choosing between different types of products with a retail price with a valid flight ticket.

Solution

Their previous experience with Symfony development was a great base to start implementing Sylius. The possibility of hosting in a CDN (Content Delivery Network) and using disposable scalable virtual machines was ensured through integration with KNP Labs’ Gaufrette Bundle, Liip’s Imagine Bundle and Doctrine (Redis) Cache. The customizability of the Sylius eCommerce platform allowed to test a variety of integrations with ticket validation form. Enqueue Library helped separate less critical processes from the user’s browser main requests.

Results
  • 2 million page views in a 24h period
  • over 100 000 write requests with Sylius Grid & Resource bundle
  • the peak of over 2000 requests per second

p24

Category:
Food
Type:
Headless eCommerce

About the company

P24.by is an online supermarket based in Belarus that deals with nearly 5000 visitors a day, and over 150000 products, including groceries and everyday products.
Since 2002, the well-known retail chain Perekrestok has been a distributor of products of the most famous domestic and foreign brands. The p24.by online grocery store was created based on the assortment of the chain.
The main idea of this e-store is to avoid queuing and wasting time shopping after work. P24 delivers purchases to the address indicated.

About the problem

P24 wanted to move their current, outdated web-store to the Sylius solutions and scale its business. The enormous amount of data caused an overall slowdown.
The main goals behind this project were implementing a productive CMS, powerful search option (with a reservation option), implementing wishlist, creating a Single Page Application with a headless eCommerce approach. Ordering, invoicing, and reporting process were also the parts that needed a revamp.

Solution

Before the launching of the project, the configuration of the Google Cloud service was configured to make it work smoothly.
A set of Sylius customizations were implemented to achieve all client’s business goals. For data filtering, Elasticsearch was implemented, for content management, a personal CMS integration (BitBag CMS plugin). The Import/Export plugin supported data migration. Role management has been handled by ACL plugin, and the whole finished off the Vue.js SPA integrated with Sylius headless Shop API.

Results
  • increasing online sales by 400%
  • decreasing page loading time by 70%
  • increasing mobile traffic by 250%

Lensvision

Category:
Lifestyle
Type:
Mobile App/eCommerce solution

About the company

Lensvision.ch is the leading lens specialist in Switzerland. They are selling their products via a B2C Oxid web store with custom B2B features that allow making optician appointments from various locations over the country. They are taking care of the selling process started by an optician or a customer in B2C, followed by a made to order request to the specific fulfiller ending up with the shipment from Lensvision’s warehouse. Right now, they are offering scheduling optician’s appointments from 25 different locations in Switzerland and selling more than 1500000 lenses per month from 200 different fulfillers.

About the problem

As Lensvision started to grow so much in the Swiss market, they decided to expand their business. Knowing everyday problems from the optic industry, they figured out that there are many opticians with limited access to the best fulfillers due to legacy software standards. They decided to provide a mobile app alongside an eCommerce web module for a specific optician, within which he can do the interview process, manage appointments and order lenses for a particular customer. The web eCommerce app, on the other hand, should be an eCommerce addition to the optician’s website. It has to allow the customers to order their lenses online, having the information about lens parameters stored for the optician they are visiting.

Solution

The technical team joined the Elvi project as Sylius & Symfony specialists. Starting with one person as a consultant, the team participated in the proof of concepts checking up Sylius performance, setting up data models, migrating the current business data. Later on, the team consisted of 4 people (incl. Lensvision’s developers) that actively participated in the project development. As a result, Lensvision got the proper API layer for orders and appointments, an ERP system for fulfilment connectors and a mobile and web eCommerce app, integrated with a CRM.

Results
  • Dedicated eCommerce for opticians
  • After the first MVP version, Lensvision opened their business for 50 new opticians.
  • The average number of sold lenses has doubled

Casa Palacio

Category:
Home & Garden
Type:
eCommerce solution

About the company

Casa Palacio is specialists in interior design services. They provide the most popular exclusive household appliances in Mexico, putting all the passion and good taste in each of the projects they carry out.

About the problem

To increase visibility on the market, Casa Palacio decided to hire an agency that will renew the appearance of their website, while maintaining all existing connections with external systems.
Rebuilding the site, combining the look and feel of the content related to the product offering and the payment process was the biggest challenge.
Casa Palacio used a SOAP service that updates information about the product, inventory, price, shipping and payments that had to be integrated into the new site.

Solution

The Sylius eCommerce Platform turned out to be a definite answer to the above requirements. Even though it does not offer all the features from scratch, it is very adaptable and allows developers to implement code in a standardized way while maintaining the highest quality.
For more specific needs, external libraries and proprietary solutions, such as CMS or a payment gateway, had to be added. Because Sylius is based on plugins added to the system, each of the requirements could be approached individually, without any dependencies between them.

Results
  • The shop manages more than 5000 SKUs (Stock Keeping Units)
  • The ability to create several types of pages consisting of one or more blocks thanks to the custom CMS
  • A centralized place to view reports about the shipping process and fraud detection in the payment process

PrintOClock

Category:
Print
Type:
eCommerce solution

About the company

Printoclock is a company from Toulouse, a precursor in e-commerce in the printing industry sector. Their customers are small businesses, retailers, freelancers, communication agencies and other print shops with an average basket value of € 100. By creating an internal workshop, they provide offset printing in large series or digital printing for smaller series, as well as cutting and filming.

About the problem

Printoclock began to deal with technical debt. Programmers felt completely blocked by coding new functions, and the maintenance and optimization of the platform were too demanding. Migration from OSCommerce to Sylius was to ensure the speed of developing a new platform and testing at every stage.
Four developers worked on the entire project. One of the challenges was that the store ran continuously for ten years, so the amount of data to be migrated was enormous, and the data also had to be organized. Another challenge was to create a functional pricing system immediately upon ordering (which took half of the time!).

Solution

Printoclock received a solution that included the CMS system as the integration of Sylius with CMSPlugin (created by BitBag), Marketing Automation (Emarsys), and several other marketing tools (for AB testing and advanced analytics) and Business Intelligence (Metabase). In the case of the hosting platform, the company decided to combine OVH / Online and AWS.
The new platform operated by Sylius handles 1000-1500 orders daily at speed three times faster than in the case of the old platform.

Results
  • Decreased loading time to First Meaningful Paint (according to Google Lighthouse report from 4,9 to 1,8 second)
  • Bounce rate decreased by about 5%
